trying to brand Israel a pariah

International Pressure on Israel Growing - Ron Ben-Yishai
The Turks are not alone in the deterioration of their ties with Israel. In recent years, up until several months ago, Israel's intelligence community estimated that the fears of Arab Sunni-majority states in the face of the Iranian-Shiite threat would prompt a process of rapprochement between them and Israel. However, the Gaza operation, reinforced by the inciting commentary of Arab satellite networks, changed the picture. We are also seeing an anti-Israel tide in Europe and in South America as well that at times gives rise to latent anti-Semitism.
We are dealing with an accumulation of positions, declarations, and actions adopted by organizations and governments worldwide with growing intensity, aimed at isolating Israel and thereby pressuring it to modify its political positions and force military restraint upon it. They are trying to brand Israel as a "pariah state," undermine the legitimacy of its very existence, and revoke its natural right and duty to defend its citizens. (Ynet News)

penalize foreign oil companies that export gasoline to Iran, Reuters reports.

The U.S. Senate on Thursday joined the House of Representatives in approving legislation that would penalize foreign oil companies that export gasoline to Iran, Reuters reports.

"Time is running out for Iran to give up its illegal nuclear weapons program," said Senators Jon Kyl and Susan Collins.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill into law, thus effectively preventing countries who sell gasoline to Iran from also delivering crude oil to the U.S. emergency petroleum stockpile.

BAGHDAD – A suicide bomber opened fire on worshippers during Friday prayers at a mosque in northern Iraq and then blew himself up after running out of ammunition, killing 12 people, police and hospital officials said.

The attacker walked into the Sunni mosque in Tal Afar and started firing on worshippers with an AK-47 rifle as the imam was delivering his sermon, a local police official said. Sixty-five people were wounded in the attack. When the shooter ran out of ammunition, he detonated his explosives belt, the official said.

The imam, Abdul-Satar Hassan, a member of Iraq's largest Sunni political party, was also killed in the attack, the official said. It was not immediately clear if the slain imam was the intended victim, although Sunni clerics have increasingly become targets in Iraq's sectarian bloodletting.

Sahir Jalal, 37, who was at the mosque for prayers, said the imam had just begun delivering a sermon when a tall man stood up.

"Then he took out a small rifle from under his jacket and started to shoot," he said.

LAHORE, Pakistan – Teams of gunmen launched coordinated attacks on three law enforcement facilities in Pakistan's second-largest city of Lahore, and car bombs exploded in two cities near the Afghan border Thursday, killing 39 people in an escalating wave of anti-government violence.

The assaults, aimed at scuttling a planned offensive into the Taliban heartland near Afghanistan, highlight Islamist militants' ability to carry out sophisticated strikes on heavily fortified facilities and expose the failure of the intelligence agencies to adequately infiltrate the extremist cells.
